The BMW 320d Sedan (E46) was a milestone in the history of BMW diesel engines. When direct injection was introduced in conjunction with an exhaust turbocharger, the 1.95 litre four-cylinder diesel engine (M47D20) generated an impressive specific power of 70 hp per litre of displacement. In March 1998, series production started up and in 2001 the engine was upgraded to 150 hp and equipped with common rail injection (M47D20TÜ). In spite of the increase in power, consumption fell to 5.5 litres. Up to 2005, more than 415,000 examples were produced to make the BMW 320d Sedan one of the most successful diesel vehicles to come out of the BMW stable.
