The BMW R25 replaced the BMW R24 in 1950. With a welded tubular frame, it was now possible to attach a sidecar, a front mudguard protected the rider from road spray. The straight-travel rear suspension was the most striking innovation. A modified fuel tank, full-hub brakes and light alloy rims were added to the BMW R25/3. The BMW R26 brought the full swing-arm chassis and a higher output of 15 hp, while the BMW R27 brought the floating engine and 18 hp output.

The chassis of the BMW R51/3 was the same as the predecessor model R51/2, but the engine was a completely new development with valves controlled by a central camshaft. With the R51/3, BMW set new standards in the prestigious 500 cc class in terms of handling, smooth running and sportiness. The R67 was specially designed for sidecar drivers, while the R68 was the top model with a maximum speed of 100 mph. In January 1955, BMW presented the first two models with full swing-arm suspension: the R50 and the R69. In April 1956, the 600 cc touring model BMW R60 replaced the BMW R67 sidecar machine. The engine was adopted almost unchanged from its predecessors and, with 28 hp and enormous torque, it provided sufficient propulsion even in sidecar mode. The decisive new feature was the full swing-arm chassis. The R69 and R69S were known as fast sports models, offered in various colours and with telescopic forks from 1967 to 1969.

In 1969, BMW relocated motorbike production from Munich to Berlin and began production of the new /5 series in September of that same year, led by the BMW R60/5. The larger BMW R60/5 and R75/5 models were extremely popular and exceeded every expectation. The BMW R60/5 was the well-balanced, mid-range model of the series, offering an attractive performance/price ratio. The top model R90S combined design and a top speed of 200 km/h for the first time. In 1978, the new BMW R45 and R65 models came as a surprise, closing the gap in the entry-level model range and the popular 500 and 600 cc displacement class.

The drive train was dubbed the “Compact Drive System” by BMW, as it was a single unit consisting of the engine, a direct-mounted gearbox and the proven single-sided swingarm with integrated cardan shaft. The futuristic K1 became the top model in the series, technically equipped with 4-valve technology, ABS and aerodynamic bodywork. The series was rounded off with harmonious 3-cylinder engines in various versions.
