Historic Motorsport SPEED BY TRADITION.

Mille Miglia, motorcycle racing or Formula One: from the outset, BMW was one of the most active and successful brands in motorsport – on two, three and four wheels. BMW Group Classic’s Historic Motorsport division has set itself the task of providing maintenance and restoration for historic racing cars and bikes and returning them to the race track. Repeatedly, the Historic Motorsport division furnishes incontrovertible proof that speed is like riding a bicycle: once learnt, never forgotten.

Historic sucesses.

Old but loud as ever.

Deafening engine noise, squealing tyres – the classic BMW racing cars and motorcycles that we send back onto the race track continue to thrill the crowds thanks to their dynamism and power. Among the most impressive examples is the Brabham BMW BT52 Formula One bolide with which Nelson Piquet won the 1983 world championship title in motor racing’s crowning discipline. The car was restored by BMW Group Classic and has already made appearances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the 41st AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix.

BMW added a further historic landmark to the year 1983. The 1,400 horsepowers of the Brabham BMW BT52 beat everyone on the racetrack. Nelson Piquet and BMW made history with their victory.

1984 One start signal. Four wins.

The history of the DTM begins with the first race in Zolder on 11th March 1984. BMW celebrates victory as well as the top four places, with Harald Grohs crossing the finishing line first in a BMW 635 CSi. It is Volker Strycek of Team Gubin, however, who finishes fifth at the finale at the Nürburgring to secure the first title for BMW.

1992 M3. More magic moments.

BMW lines up with a works team in the DTM for the last time for a while: Johnny Cecotto again finishes fourth in the Drivers' Championship to end the season as the number one BMW driver. Roberto Ravaglia provides a magical moment at the season finale in Hockenheim on 11th October 1992: he claims two victories in the BMW M3's last works outing in the DTM.

2015 Start-up difficulties and sevenfold victories.

The 2015 season brought with it a number of changes. The new race format, with two races per weekend, promised twice as much race action for drivers and fans alike. For BMW Motorsport, the season got off to a shaky start in Hockenheim, with the opening two races yielding a disappointing 38 points. And Lady Luck was not on the side of the Munich-based manufacturer at the Lausitzring or the Norisring either. The goals set at the start of the season already looked unrealistic after just three rounds. However, BMW finally hit back in Zandvoort: the historic top-seven lock-out in Saturday’s race was to prove the turning point.

There are other spectacular racing classics with which we bring the glory days of BMW Motorsport back to life. As an example, a BMW E30 M3 and an M1 were on hand as race taxis at all 10 DTM races as part of the support programme. Select models are also actively deployed at the Oldtimer Grand Prix, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival, the Ennstal Race Car Trophy, the Zandvoort Historic Grand Prix, the Rossfeld Bergrennen, the Baiersbronn Classic, the DTM Track Test Hockenheim and the Techno Classica Essen. Among the highlights: the BMW R 50 Kaczor was completely assembled as a replica and unveiled before a delighted crowd at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival.
