The BMW 318Ci Coupé was launched in the marketplace in the autumn of 2001 and provided the smallest engine for the coupé (at least on the German market). Initially, it was equipped with the technically revised four-cylinder inline engine from its predecessor (M43TÜ) with a displacement of 1.9 litres, which delivered an output of 118 hp. From autumn of 2001, an innovative power plant was installed (N42), which had been developed from the ground up. It had VALVETRONIC for the first time, which could also control the valve stroke (alongside variable valve timing, VANOS). The displacement was increased to 2.0 litres and the engine now generated an output of 143 hp. March 2004 saw the deployment of its successor in the form of the N46.
