The BMW 316g compact was presented in 1995. The engine could either be powered by gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG). This made the BMW 316g compact particularly suitable for metropolitan areas. A button on the center console allowed the driver to manually switch between the two types of drive. When the gas supply is running low, the switch to gasoline mode is automatic. The gas tank comprised 80 liters and was installed in place of the rear seats. The BMW 316g compact remained in the model range until 2000.
