After firm establishment of the first new models of the "Grand Sedan" ("Große Limousine") (E3) since 1968 in the segment of top-of-the-range sedans, BMW supplemented the model range in May 1971 with the BMW 3.0 S enhanced by a larger displacement in May 1971. Just a few months later in September 1971, a model with electronic intake manifold injection was launched on the market as the BMW 3.0 Si. It generated around 20 hp more than the carburettor model. Bodywork, interior design and chassis were based on the highest safety standards of the time while the cars still provided athletic driving performance.
