Between the summer of 1958 and the summer of 1961, BMW 2.6 was the official model designation for the BMW 501 eight-cylinder marketed since 1955. This was the cost-effective alternative to the luxuriously equipped BMW 502. In contrast with the six-cylinder models, the lightweight alloy V8 engine exhibited driving performance appropriate to that of a luxury sedan.
