The visual appearance and engineering of the BMW M5 (E28) made it a genuine motor-sport vehicle. The engine compartment was fitted with an engine from the legendary BMW M1 (M88/3). This automobile was presented at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. The undoubtedly high price tag was explained by the complex process of hand-made craftmanship production. In addition to Germany, the BMW M5 was also supplied in other markets (including North America, Japan and South Africa). Special models with variations in visual appearance and engineering were produced for these markets. A total of 2,241 vehicles were produced and sold across the world between 1985 and 1988.
