Even before production of the last BMW Coupé of the "old school" ("alte Schule") - the BMW 3200 CS - was brought to an end, the coupé version of the "New Class" ("Neue Klasse") was launched in 1965. This used the chassis and drive unit of the four-door sedans accompanied by a contemporary coupé body that was designed to fit harmoniously into the line of the new BMW automobiles. Lack of in-house capacity meant that the body had to be produced by automotive manufacturer Karmann in Osnabrück. Between 1965 and 1970, a total of 13,691 coupés in the New Class (Neue Klasse) were produced.
