As early as 1953, BMW had initial ideas to build a true sports car again. Therefore, the BMW 507 was designed by Albrecht Graf Goertz. After the board of directors had reviewed several sketches, it was decided to build the BMW 507 and presented it for the first time at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1955. The car was intended to boost sales for the crisis-ridden company and reposition the BMW brand in the dynamic automotive market of the 1950s. Although the BMW 507 attracted the hoped-for attention, it barely found any buyers. The vehicle, which was originally planned for series production, was finally produced only in individual production from 1956. At the end of its construction period in 1959, just 251 units had been built.
