The second generation of the BMW 3 Series was launched in 1982. It was manufactured with an unparalleled diversity of models not yet seen at BMW and broke all previous sales records of the company up to 1991 with more than 2.3 million units sold. Starting in 1985, a vehicle with a six-cylinder diesel engine was included in the BMW 3 Series for the first time. The BMW 324d was powered by an 86 hp naturally aspirated diesel engine and continued the success story of the diesel engine debuted for the first time in 1983.
