The second generation of the BMW 3 Series was launched in 1982. It was manufactured with an unparalleled diversity of models not yet seen at BMW and broke all previous sales records of the company up to 1991 with more than 2.3 million units sold. The sportiest model of the series was initially the BMW 323i. This automobile powered by an inline six-cylinder engine was ideal for ambitious drivers. The BMW 323i also had a Check Control by means of the service interval indicator. As early as 1985, the vehicle had already been displaced by the even more potent BMW 325i.
