The first BMW 3 series fitted with four-cylinder engines, which was produced from 1975, was a runaway sales success, and was followed in 1977 by the first 3 Series model powered by a six-cylinder carburettor engine. Production of the top-of-the-range BMW 3 Series model, the 323i Type with a 143 hp injection engine, started in early 1978. The agility demonstrated by this compact sports sedan brought back delightful memories recalling the nimble and powerful BMW 02 models built in the 1970s.
