The BMW 320i Touring was the entry-level model into the world of the BMW six-cylinder series engines. The smallest six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2.0 litres was both particularly economical and gave a very smooth ride. At high engine speeds it provided extremely sporty driving. When the BMW 320i Touring was launched at the end of September 1999, the M52TÜ engine with Double VANOS and additional catalytic converters in the exhaust manifolds was initially installed in order to improve environmental compatibility. From 2001, the successor engine M54 was finally deployed with a displacement volume increased to 2.2 litres. Optimised airflow inside the intake and exhaust channels brought about an increase in power from 150 to 170 hp.
