The first Touring models were added to the BMW 5 Series (E34) product range in September 1991. At this point, the BMW 525i Sedan was also complemented by a Touring model. Right from the start, the more advanced inline six-cylinder engine with four-valve technology was installed (M50B25), delivering 192 hp. From September 1992, similar to the sedan, a revised version with VANOS technology for the intake camshaft was installed in the Touring model (M50B25TU). The BMW 525i was also very popular as the Touring model. By June 1996, more than 27,000 units had been assembled - these figures rank it close behind the BMW 520i Touring, which still had a price tag of DM 10,000 less.
