The group of engines supplied for the BMW 7 Series E38 presented in 1994 was completed at the lower end of the range in 1996 with a six-cylinder unit. The power plant used was the four-valve engine delivering 193 hp familiar from the BMW 328i and 528i. While the BMW 728i advanced to become one of the most popular models, the extended BMW 728iL version failed to achieve high production statistics. Only 4,901 examples were produced.
