The BMW 320i Sedan provided the entry into the world of the six-cylinder petrol engines of the BMW 3 Series. The M52TÜ engine was installed when the sedan was launched in 1998. It was equipped with Double VANOS and additional catalytic converters in the exhaust manifolds in order to improve environmental compatibility. In 2001, a completely new engine was used (M54B22), although the engineering was very closely related to that of its predecessor. This power plant also had variable camshaft adjustment for the intake and exhaust valves and a lightweight alloy cylinder head. The increase in power from 150 to 170 hp was primarily due to the improvement in airflow within the intake and exhaust channels. The BMW 320i Sedan was manufactured exclusively in Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg and Rosslyn (South Africa).
