The BMW 525td (E39) was the successor to the BMW 525td (E34). A revised version of the M51 engine was installed to power the vehicle. It delivered a higher maximum torque as a result of improvements to injection, mixture formation and turbocharger technology. As in the case of its predecessor, no air-charge cooler was installed in the BMW 525td (E39). However, this version was only supplied as a sedan and was only available in a few European markets. The model equipped with an air-charge cooler was much more widespread, marketed under the name BMW 525tds (E39).
