After 6 years of development, the second generation of the BMW 5 Series (E28) was presented in the first half of 1981. While the first engines were still known from the previous series (BMW 5 Series E12), new engines soon added to the range. For example, there were the first diesel engines in this series (BMW 524d and 524td), which quickly proved to be a successful concept. The eta-models (BMW 525e and 528e), which stood for high efficiency, were also new. And last but not least, from 1984, there was also the first BMW M5 with a 286 hp six-cylinder engine in this series.
