The convertible derived from the second-generation 3 Series with no roll-over bar ranked among the most successful models of its kind in the world between 1986 and 1993. After the BMW 325i Convertible was launched as the first full convertible powered by a six-cylinder engine in 1986, the range was supplemented in the same year by the BMW 320i Convertible version generating 125 hp and the smallest six-cylinder engine from BMW.
