The BMW M3 Convertible was equipped with the 2.3 litre four-cylinder engine taken from the BMW M3 Sedan (S14B23). This meant that it initially delivered an output of 195 hp as standard (200 hp without catalytic converter) and from September 1990 packed 215 hp. Customers were offered a choice between the colours Dark Blue and Black for the fabric roof. In the first instance, the roof was opened by an electrohydraulic mechanism but from March 1990 a new electromechanical opening mechanism was installed. An optional hardtop was available also finished in Black or Dark Blue, although this option was ordered by just ten customers. The additional technology made the convertible version approximately 160 kg heavier than the sedan.
