BMW assigned a pioneering role to the new 3 Series and installed a six-cylinder inline engine under the hood for the first time in this class. The two new models - the 320 six-cylinder and the 323i were the central focus of interest for BMW enthusiasts at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn 1977. The combination of sporty chassis, manoeuvrability and the powerful six-cylinder engines was a unique selling proposition setting them apart from the competition. Up until 1982, the BMW 320 was one of the most frequently manufactured models of the first BMW 3 Series.
