In 1971, ALPINA was commissioned by BMW to develop a lightweight version of the BMW 3.0 CS. The vehicles were intended as homologation models for touring-car motor sport. The first models up to 1972 adopted the engine of the BMW 3.0 CS and likewise generated 180 hp. Advantages resulted from the use of lightweight alloy body parts, Plexiglas and the reduction of insulation and equipment. This yielded weight savings of up to 200 kg. After just 169 cars with carburetted engines, the 3.0 CSL was fitted with the 200 hp injection power unit from the BMW 3.0 CSi and similarly generated 200 hp.
