In autumn 1968, BMW re-entered the market for top-of-the-range vehicles with a coupé. The new model series known as E9 within the company was primarily referred to under the designation of "Grand Coupé" ("Großes Coupé"). All the models in this series were provided with a six-cylinder inline engine derived from the M30 engine family. The displacements ranged from 2.5 to 3.0 litres delivering power of up to 206 hp (BMW 3.0 CSL). Alongside two-stage carburettors, intake-manifold injection systems were also installed from 1971 onwards. The BMW "Grand Coupé" ("Großes Coupé") (E9) is regarded as the precursor of the new BMW 6 Series (E24). This model series was launched in the marketplace in 1976.
