From April 2000, the BMW X5 3.0i complemented the product range of the BMW X5 (E53) at the lower end. The car was the entry-level model for the series and remained in the product range until it was replaced by the new X5 model series (E70). The engine for the 3.0 litre version was the distinguishing feature setting it apart from the "bigger" ("größere") models. Instead of a V8, an inline six-cylinder engine of Type M54B30 was installed. This facilitated a harmonious combination of power, smooth running and economy which was appealing to a large number of customers. A total of 260,000 units of the vehicle had been supplied at a purchase price of DM 80,000 by September 2006.
