“More car, more engine, more sport” — that was the slogan for the BMW 318is (E30). The core of this model, released in 1989, was the engine, which had four valves per cylinder. During this time, the technology was still unusual at BMW and was adapted from motorsport. The new engine also had a special combustion chamber design and fully electronic engine management. A standard sports suspension and disc brakes on the rear and front axles also ensured a sporty driving experience. There were also equipment options that were actually withheld from the six-cylinder models.
