The second generation of the BMW 3 series was launched in 1982. It was manufactured with an unparalleled diversity of models not yet seen at BMW and broke all previous sales records of the company to 1991 with more than 2.3 million units sold. Anyone who was particularly keen on sportiness was able to order the BMW 318is with a 136 hp four-valve engine from 1989. Standard equipment for this model included supply with a catalytic converter.
