In addition to a sedan version, a Touring version of the BMW 525td was launched in 1993. This should not be confused with the BMW 525tds. Although the two model versions shared the same basic engine (M51D25), an additional charge-air cooler meant that the athletic tds version was intended to have the profile of a "Sport" version of the BMW 525td. Customers purchasing the sedan clearly preferred the td version to the sporty tds version, whereas in the case of the Touring model, precisely the opposite was the case. While the BMW 525tds Touring was the most popular Touring diesel model, the sales figures for the BMW 525td Touring trailed far behind. Only 4,777 examples had been produced by June 1996.
