The BMW 318i Sedan was launched in 1997 and was one of the first models that customers could order directly through the dealer. Initially, it was powered by a four-cylinder engine generating 118 hp. In 2001, the sedan was given the new N42 engine fitted with VALVETRONIC technology and it generated 143 hp to offer improved driving performance and fuel efficiency. In 2003, the N42 engine was replaced by the N46B18 engine. The BMW 318i gave the customer a choice between a manual five-speed gearshift and an automatic transmission. The 318i Sedan was primarily produced in Munich, Regensburg and South Africa, and a total of almost 398,037 vehicles of this type were produced up until 2005.
