The BMW 1600-2 quickly developed into a sales hit. It offered practical features and a lot of driving fun at a very favourable price and in an attractive package. In the spring of 1971, this model series was supplemented by the body variant for the "estate sedan" ("Kombi-Limousine"). The Types 1600, 2000 and 2000 tii Touring were launched under the designation "Touring". Just two years later, production of the basic model BMW 1600 Touring ceased after only 4,379 cars had been manufactured.
