At the International Geneva Motor Show in early 1954, BMW presented the type 502 with a 2.6-litre, eight-cylinder lightweight alloy engine. Between October 1958 and July 1961, the official model designation was BMW 2.6 Luxus and virtually no notable technical modifications were made. From July 1961 until production of the BMW eight-cylinder automobile was discontinued at the end of 1963, the "Baroque Angel" ("Barockengel") underwent another change in name and the entry-level model was supplied as the BMW 2600 L.
