Following the 3 Series Sedan (1990), Coupé (1991), Convertible (1993) and Touring (1995) versions, BMW launched a new variant on the market as early as 1994, the 3 Series Compact. The body was 23 cm shorter than the sedan, and the rear-wheel drive made the Compact a unique product. The entry-level model was the 316i Compact generating 102 hp. The high-revving 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine was an impressive vehicle with its running smoothness and efficiency. The braking system is also an identifiable feature of the BMW 316i. The standard version only has disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear.
