BMW 5 Series

The model series E12 was not simply the first model generation of the popular BMW 5 Series but also the first model series to witness the introduction of the series nomenclature that is still used today. Automobiles in the BMW 5 Series (E12) were the successors of the New Class (Neue Klasse) and they were launched in the marketplace in 1972. They were equipped with four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, and injection versions were subsequently added to the carburettor models. At the start of production, the automobiles rolled off the assembly line in Munich before subsequently being produced at the new Dingolfing Plant. The first BMW 5 Series models were a great success. Almost 700,000 cars were produced up until 1981.
