In 1933, the first BMW was presented with an inline six-cylinder engine - the BMW 303. The engine was only 1.2 litres and this made it one of the smallest six-cylinder engines of its time. The literature describes this car as the first "Fahrerauto" ("driver’s car") produced by BMW. A feature of this construction was that the chassis frame was developed using the principles of lightweight design. The chassis was only reinforced at points where forces act on it and was designed at the other places with a more streamlined shape. This chassis was slimmer and therefore more lightweight. During the years 1933 and 1934, a total of 2,300 units of the BMW 303 were produced.
