The BMW 530d Touring (E39) was launched in September 1998 at the same time as the sedan. A new generation of diesel engines was installed in these models for the first time. These engines were designed with common rail injection (M57), which represented significant progress in the development of BMW diesel engines. Initially the engine generated a power output of 184 hp and delivered maximum torque of 390 Nm. From 2000, output was as much as 193 hp and the torque was 410 Nm. It was still built in this form up until 2004.
