Manufacture of the first automobile designed in-house - the BMW 3/20 PS AM 1 - was launched in 1932. Most importantly, the new car had more room than the previous model, the BMW 3/15 PS. The wheelbase was lengthened by some 25 cm and this permitted much more generously dimensioned bodies which were manufactured by Daimler-Benz at its Sindelfingen coachworks. Customers had a choice between five standard bodies: the sedan (subsequently also available with a roll-up roof), the delivery van, the touring car, the two-seater and the four-seater convertible. While design work was carried out in Munich for the first time, production continued to take place in Eisenach.
