When the BMW 5 Series (E39) was launched, the BMW 525tds Touring was the only Touring diesel model. It was the successor to the BMW 525tds Touring (E34) and took over this model's engine in a technically revised version (M51D25TÜ). This upgrade included improvements to injection, turbocharger technology and mixture formation. The diesel engine combined super torque for sporty driving performance with a noise development that was exemplary for diesel engines. In March 2000, it was replaced by the BMW 525d (E39) with a completely new generation of diesel engines.
