From 1930, BMW presented passionate sports drivers with a particularly attractive offering in the form of the tiny Type 3/15 PS DA 3 Wartburg. It was styled on the basis of the English template provided by the Austin 7 "Ulster". This was the first time since 1903 that an automobile had been designated with the name of Eisenach's striking landmark - the Wartburg castle. The 750 cc four-cylinder engine powering the small boat-tailed roadster was tuned from 15 hp to 18 hp with increased compression, and provided with a copper intake manifold and twin exhaust system. The sports car only weighed 400 kg and it soon developed into a popular and successful automobile for campaigning in motor sport. Only 150 units of this absolutely charming roadster were sold up to 1931 but this car was the founder of BMW's automobile racing history.
