Starting in February 1969, the BMW 2800 rolled off the assembly line as the second model to stand alongside the BMW 2500. It had a more powerful engine than the entry-level model and also had more upscale series equipment with Nivomat shock absorbers, limited-slip differential and heated rear window. The built-in six-cylinder in-line engine (M30B25) was based on the four-cylinder engine (M10) of the New Class ("Neue Klasse"). Thanks to a special combustion chamber design, the combustion was so complete that the engine was even able to meet the strict exhaust gas standards in the USA without additional equipment. There, the BMW 2800 was marketed as “BMW Bavaria”.
