The sedan was the standard body of the BMW 5 Series (E34), which was complemented by a Touring version from September 1991. It ranked in the upper mid-range market segment and was distinguished from the competition by its unique appearance combining timeless elegance and sportiness. Italian stylist Ercole Spada was in charge of the design under the auspices of Chief Designer Claus Luthe. Over the course of the construction period, modifications and improvements were continuously made to the appearance, safety and technology within the individual engine versions.
