The new BMW 3 Series (E36) had an unparalleled model diversity. The fifth body variant was launched in the form of the 3 Series Touring in 1995, following on from the Sedan (1990), Coupé (1991), Convertible (1993) and Compact (1994). This variant was also supplied with a four-cylinder or six-cylinder turbodiesel. The six-cylinder version set new benchmarks in the diesel class as the BMW 325tds Touring. The new engine was fitted with charge-air coolers and was a superb performer generating 143 hp with smooth-running characteristics and low petrol consumption.
