The new BMW 3 Series (E36) had an unparalleled model diversity. The fifth body variant was launched with the 3 Series Touring in 1995, following on from the Sedan (1990), Coupé (1991), Convertible (1993) and Compact (1994). This variant was also supplied with a four-cylinder or six-cylinder turbodiesel fitted with a charge-air cooler. The 318tds generating 90 hp featured particularly high smooth-running characteristics and was the most successful diesel model with nearly 25,000 units.
