The BMW 318is Sedan (E36) is one of the little surprises within the BMW product range. The unassuming "s" at the end of the model designation highlighted the special feature of the sports sedan: the installed four-cylinder inline engine with an arrangement of four-valve technology (M42). While the "Standard" BMW 318i (E36) was only fitted with two valves for each cylinder, the athletic prowess of the BMW 318is was very significantly more impressive as it delivered an output of 140 hp rather than 113 hp. From 1996, the M44 successor engine was installed in the sedan. This introduced a Differentiated Intake System (DISA) and a new generation of engine control units.
