When the BMW 3 Series Coupé (E36) was launched, the coupé was already available as the BMW 320i powered by an inline six-cylinder engine. Also installed in the 5 Series, the small 2.0 litre engine was not intended to deliver a higher power output than in the four-cylinder engine. Rather, the aim was a more smooth-running engine with greater efficiency and torque curve, with a consequent higher level of environmental compatibility. The standard equipment was again upgraded for the BMW 320i Coupé in order to provide it with a distinct profile and set it apart from the four-cylinder models.
