At the beginning of 1966, production of one of the most harmonious and most popular versions of the New Class was launched in the form of the BMW 2000. The initial price tag of significantly below DM 12,000 gave customers a compact touring car with some extremely impressive credentials in the form of a top speed of almost 170 km/h, robust power of 100 hp and outstanding athletic and sporty driving characteristics. When production finally came to an end in January 1972, nearly 120,000 examples of the successful model had been produced.
