BMW presented a beacon of hope with the BMW 700 in the autumn of 1959. The engineering of the new model was based on the technology of the BMW 600, taking over its twin-cylinder Boxer engine featuring a slightly increased displacement and its modern semi-trailing arm rear axle. The self-supporting body designed by Giovanni Michelotti broke away from the previous language of form and gave the small car a modern, extremely appealing appearance. The small car was therefore in line with the tastes of many purchasers and represented an urgently needed success for BMW.
