The 309 model series was intended for budget-conscious purchasers. It offered the same excellent road holding and sophisticated corduroy interior within the new body built in Sindelfingen. However, cost considerations meant that buyers had to accept the significantly less powerful engine version. Furthermore, weight restrictions meant that front and rear bumpers were omitted. A large number of purchasers were found for this economy model despite these restrictions.
