The BMW M1 is the first completely new development from Motorsport GmbH which was intended for campaigning in Group 4 races. To this end, a series version of 400 examples was developed for purposes of homologation. The project was initially launched in cooperation with Lamborghini but it had to be completed with automotive manufacturer Bauer owing to the difficult economic situation being experienced by the Italian sports-car producer. Following a brief delay, the BMW M1 was finally presented to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show in 1978.
