From 1998, a special version of the BMW M Coupé was produced for the American market. This was due to the strict exhaust-gas regulations that the standard engine (S50B32) was unable to comply with. It was therefore replaced by the S52B32 for the market in the USA (from 2001 by the S54B32 in a modified version). The engine had rather less power than the European sister model but it made driving more environmentally friendly. The BMW M Coupé was relatively rare and by 2002 only 2,858 US versions had been produced.
