In the last model year, BMW added numerous improvements to the sedan to address criticism of the lack of space and the hard front suspension. As a result of design changes, the all-steel body was significantly reinforced and the interior was extended by 20 cm, which primarily benefited the rear passengers. The newly developed front swing axle was expected to improve road holding and increased driving safety. Contrary to expectations, however, the softer cushioning led to reduced stability and directional stability, which led to severe negative reviews from the trade press.
