The BMW 1600 (from 1971 renamed BMW 1602) is the first model in the new BMW 02 Series. The engineering of the BMW 1602 is based on its sister model from the New Class (Neue Klasse). It underwent a massive revision during the years 1971 and 1974. From 1974, it was also provided with luxury equipment on request to afford additional comfort. This automobile was in the sales product range until 1975. More than a quarter of a million units were built and this made it the second most popular 02 Series model after the BMW 2002.
